Filmmaker Doug Liman has been a key mover and shaker in Hollywood ever since the theatrical release of his 1996 film Swingers – which was written by and starred Jon Favreau in one of his own early career highlights. Since that time, Liman’s career has seen him at the helm of a number of major franchise movies and blockbuster hits alike, most notably including The Bourne Identity in 2002, Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2005 and Edge of Tomorrow in 2014.
Although Liman has produced nearly twice as many films as he has directed to date, the movies that Liman has seen fit to call the shots on have generally proven to be solid crowd-pleasers; even his less-popular offerings (like Jumper) have their share of fans. Liman’s next movie – the true story-based American Made, starring Tom Cruise – is scheduled to arrive in 2017, and he’s currently attached to helm several more films in the future. We can now add one more item to Liman’s to-do list as director, in the form of Unearthed.
According to Deadline, Liman has been tapped to direct the theatrical adaptation of Unearthed, based on the first installment in a two-volume science-fiction book series written by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. The movie will be produced by Cross Creek Productions, and is set to revolv around the central exploits of Jules Addison and Amelia Radcliffe – in what is being billed as a Tomb Raider meets Indiana Jones action/adventure story, only set in space.
Despite the fact that the original two-volume series of novels has yet to be published – with an official publication date looming next year – authors Kaufman and Spooner were such big fans of Liman that they were more than willing to sell the Unearthed property ahead of time. Given Liman’s track record as an exceptional director/producer of sci-fi genre fare, Unearthed may very well prove to on par with something like Edge of Tomorrow (a film that currently has a sequel in early development).
With Liman directing Unearthed, there’s a good chance that the movie will be more than worthy of its source material. It’s not altogether clear what the timetable for the project is right now though – given that Liman is also onboard to direct such developing movies as the Justice League Dark comic book adaptation, Dark Universe, and the young adult novel adaptation Chaos Walking, sometime in the foreseeable future.
We’ll bring you more details on Unearthed as they become available.
