These days, a movie can be made out of virtually anything. Studios have been adapting novels, comic books, and even newspaper articles to the big screen for years, and executives are always looking for the next source. In recent years, a popular trend has been to bring a famous toy line to the big screen. Not all can be tremendous financial successes like Transformers and The LEGO Movie, but that won’t stop some filmmakers from trying to turn a well-known brand into a major movie franchise.
DreamWorks will be attempting this very thing later this year when they release the animated film Trolls. Based on the dolls that have been around since 1959, the movie features an all-star cast that includes the likes of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, and Zooey Deschanel (among several other A-listers). These days, the product line is owned by Hasbro, and they are looking to take advantage of the film’s premiere with some brand new playsets featuring characters from the film.
The toys will be officially unveiled at a pre-New York Comic-Con 2016 event that Screen Rant is attending, but before then Hasbro has released some images. Below, you can see pictures of the KRE-O Coronation Playset, the KRE-O Guy Diamond’s Glitterific Grooves Playset, and the KRE-O Poppy’s Bug Adventure Playset. These will be available in January 2017.
For those not in the know, KRE-O is essentially Hasbro’s version of LEGO; creative construction sets that allow people to customize while playing. These Trolls kits include new building materials such as “shimmerama sheets” and “fabrical felt” in order to kids to think “outside the bricks” and have dynamic and richer storytelling experience. The possibilities appear to be limitless with this line, since they all include several KRE-O pieces. The Coronation Playset has 273, Guy Diamond’s Glitterific Grooves comes with 77, and Poppy’s Bug Adventure has 53.
The Trolls merchandise represents only a fraction of Hasbro’s KRE-O line. They first released the toys in 2011 for Transformers, Battleship, and G.I. Joe. Trolls is part of the re-launch initiative for 2017. Key selling points include all-new product design, the aforementioned building materials, figure play, and enhanced customization. Hasbro’s hope obviously is that the Trolls film is a massive hit, which will lead to substantial revenue generated from the tie-in items. Even if the movie doesn’t go over well, kids will most likely be interested in playing with the colorful sets and making their own adventures. Trolls have been popular for a long time, and that probably won’t change any time soon.
Trolls opens in U.S. theaters November 4, 2016.
