Star Wars: Episode VIII is set to arrive in theaters with a lot of questions left unanswered. The many new faces introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens left much yet to be known about what led them to the positions they were in at the beginning of the movie. Daisy Ridley’s force-sensitive scavenger Rey carries about as much mystery as anyone in the new trilogy, especially after the hints dropped about her early life in The Force Awakens.
One of the new trilogy’s greatest mysteries is Rey’s true lineage. There has been a wide range of theories as to how Rey could possibly connect to Star Wars’ famous family trees, and even speculation on how she might connect to Rogue One: A Star Wars protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). Considering Rey’s force abilities, the most popular theories have centered around her connection to the Skywalker, Kenobi, or even Solo families. The mystery could ultimately be answered in Episode VIII.
Ridley spoke recently with Vulture as she promoted her new documentary The Eagle Huntress, which she narrated and executive produced. When asked if she might be related to Obi-Wan Kenobi, she replied, “We will see in a year … Just sit tight on that question.” Without confirming or denying anything about her relation to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ridley strongly hinted that the answer to Rey’s true parentage will be revealed in Episode VIII when it premieres in 2017.
Rogue One was also a big topic, as Ridley said that she knows the ending but has “no idea really what happens in it.” When asked about Rey’s possible connections to Jyn Erso, Ridley sounded unprepared for the question but unsure if such a theory is even possible.
“I mean, I think historically it wouldn’t work, because she is … Darth Vader is there … so she would ultimately be my great-grandma; no, she would be my grandma … I mean it could happen, especially in a galaxy far, far away.”
The most popular theories generally involve Rey being the daughter of Luke Skywalker or the granddaughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi. It appears that the only certainty of Rey’s true parentage is that it will have a major impact on the galaxy and the rest of the trilogy. Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow described the ultimate answer to Rey’s family as “deeply and profoundly satisfying.”
No matter what the true answer turns out to be for Rey’s lineage, it will be a momentous decision that will invoke strong reactions. There’s no reason to believe it won’t be done well, but it’s obviously a crucial storytelling moment where good execution will be paramount. Considering the far-reaching nature of many of the theories out there about Rey, and the popularity of the theories that hit the closest to the heart of the franchise, it’s safe to assume that Episode VIII’s potential big reveal will prove someone’s theory correct.
