Despite its mostly negative reviews, if there was one thing that both critics and fans seemed to agree on about DC’s Suicide Squad, it was the phenomenal performances from a majority of the film’s lead actors. In addition to Margot Robbie’s expected praise for her performance as Harley Quinn and Viola Davis bringing the goods once again as Amanda Waller though, the surprise standout of the movie ended up being Jay Hernandez’s El Diablo. Having a surprisingly well fleshed out and emotional backstory, the character ended up feeling like one of the most complete in the ensemble, and allowed Hernandez to give a legitimately great performance as the character.
Unfortunately, it didn’t look like El Diablo had much of a future in the DC Extended Universe by the time the film was over. Having seemingly perished in the film’s final battle, or at least disappearing never to be seen again, El Diablo’s fate seemed to be one of fans’ biggest questions leaving the theatres earlier this year.
However, during a recent interview with Variety Latino, Hernandez himself spoke about the possibility of El Diablo returning in the sequel, reiterating that he hasn’t heard anything yet, but that doesn’t mean fans should count it out either.
“You know what, let’s just say he’s a metahuman. What are you going to do? There are possibilities there. I’m not saying anything but, there are some possibilities. I haven’t heard anything yet from anyone but even if I had, do you think I could tell you? [laughs]”
Considering the fan and critical acclaim that Hernandez received for his performance as the character, it wouldn’t necessarily be surprising if DC and David Ayer found some way to bring the character back from the supposed dead. Thankfully, by this interview and some of his previous comments, it seems like Hernandez would be more than up for an El Diablo return as well.
Right now, the fate of the Suicide Squad sequel is unknown, with the only other film confirmed to be in development that’s related to it being the Margot Robbie co-produced Harley Quinn spin-off. So before fans even start speculating about which characters will return and which won’t, they’ll have to wait for an official announcement about the sequel to come first.
Whenever that does happen though, it’ll be interesting to see if they do choose to bring El Diablo back or not. Whether that ended up coming in the form an explanation of where he was when the battle actually ended, how he survived the climax, or involved actually bringing him back from the dead – it seems safe to say that fans would just be happy to seem him back on the big screen again.
Suicide Squad will be available on digital November 15, 2016 and Blu-ray December 13, 2016.
