A pair of newcomers led the way at the box office this week, but the debuts weren’t much to write home about.
In first is Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (read our review), which made $28.5 million in its first three days. Though the film was seen by some critics (but not all) as a return to form for the famously oddball director, the debut is actually lower than Burton’s flop Dark Shadows ($29.6 million). The likeliest culprit for that is the movie not having much appeal beyond Burton’s pre-existing fan base. Since the word-of-mouth was mixed, the fantasy adventure didn’t have the “must-see” label. Additionally, the source material is not as popular as previous YA adaptations – like Harry Potter – so that probably hurt its prospects as well.
Looking to the long haul, Miss Peregrine‘s may have difficulty maintaing strong legs as its run progresses. It’s true that it won the weekend, but that’s in part because the competition wasn’t exactly top notch and it was able to take advantage of that fact. As more high-profile movies enter theaters in October, they could eclipse Burton’s latest. The numbers show that Miss Peregrine‘s wasn’t really in much demand, which means it could take a hit in business in the coming weeks.
Deepwater Horizon (read our review) debuts in second, grossing $20.6 million. Compared to the wide opening for the last Mark Wahlberg/Peter Berg collaboration (Lone Survivor), that’s a noticeable decrease. The aforementioned war drama made $37.8 million when it expanded in early 2014, illustrating that Deepwater Horizon doesn’t have as much commercial appeal. The oil disaster drama was the beneficiary of some strong reviews heading into the weekend, but that didn’t necessarily help its case with general audiences.
This presents something of a problem, since the production budget was estimated at $110 million. So far, Deepwater has made just $33 million worldwide, so it has a long way to go before it turns a profit. The hope is that the reaction from those who have seen it will encourage other viewers to check it out, but that remains to be seen. It could have decent legs as the fall moves along, but adults are going to have no shortage of options to choose from, so Deepwater may not hang around for long.
Last week’s champ, The Magnificent Seven, fell to third in its second weekend, making $15.7 million. The Western remake has now brought in $61.6 million domestically. It’s gotten a small boost from the international markets, as its global total stands at $82.9 million. Soon, it will make back its $90 million budget.
In fourth is Storks with $13.8 million. As the only major animated film playing in thousands of theaters, the film was able to hold on to its target demographic, falling just 35.2 percent from its opening weekend. The latest from Warner Animation Group is now up to $38.8 million in the States.
Rounding out the top five is Sully. Clint Eastwood’s biopic continues its strong commercial performance, grossing $8.4 million in its fourth weekend. The film has now brought in $105.3 million, the third best intake for an Eastwood directed project.
Coming in sixth is the new comedy Masterminds (read our review), which grossed $6.6 million in its first three days. Despite the star-studded cast, the ensemble piece didn’t do very well with critics, and that certainly limited its appeal.
The #7 film is Queen of Katwe. Expanding nationwide to 1,242 locations, the drama made $2.6 million to raise its domestic total to $3 million.
In eighth is Don’t Breathe. The horror hit made $2.3 million in its sixth weekend and now stands at $84.7 million domestically.
Bridget Jones’s Baby is in ninth place. The rom-com added $2.3 million to its Stateside total, which is currently $20.9 million.
Capping off the top ten is Snowden. Oliver Stone’s latest brought in $2 million over the weekend, increasing its North American gross to $18.7 million.
